New Delhi – The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) today provided a comprehensive account of the extensive and deliberate violations of Indian airspace carried out by the Pakistan military on the intervening night of May 8th and 9th, 2025. These actions involved a massive deployment of drones and heavy weaponry along the entire western border, aimed at Indian military infrastructure.
During a briefing, officials including Colonel Qureshi and Wing Commander Singh detailed the scale and nature of the Pakistani aggression. “On the intervening night of 8th, 9th May 2025, Pakistan military carry out multiple violations of Indian airspace along the entire western border with an intent to target military infrastructure,” they stated.
The violations were not isolated incidents but occurred across a vast stretch of the border. Pakistan military also resorted to firing of heavy caliber weapons along the Line of Control (LoC). A key element of the assault was the attempted drone intrusions, which were detected at an astonishing 36 locations, spanning from Lelay to Sir Creek. The sheer number of drones involved in these intrusion attempts was estimated to be between 300 and 400.
The Indian armed forces were on high alert and responded effectively to these multiple threats. They successfully brought down a number of these intruding drones using both kinetic and non-kinetic means, preventing them from achieving their objectives.
According to the MEA, the possible purpose behind such large-scale and coordinated aerial intrusions was to test India’s air defense (AD) systems and to gather intelligence on their capabilities, deployment, and response mechanisms. Forensic examination of the debris from the downed drones is ongoing, with preliminary reports suggesting the use of Turkish “assist drones.”
The aggression extended beyond drone intrusions and heavy shelling. Later in the night, an armed Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) belonging to Pakistan attempted to specifically target the Bathinda military station. This was a direct attempt to strike a significant military installation. However, the Indian forces detected and neutralized this armed UAV before it could inflict any damage.
These actions by Pakistan represent a serious and concerted effort to escalate tensions and challenge India’s security apparatus along the border. The use of a large number of drones across multiple points simultaneously indicates a planned and sophisticated attempt to overwhelm or probe Indian defenses.
The MEA spokesperson underscored the gravity of these violations and the clear hostile intent behind them. The briefing, supported by the operational details provided by Colonel Qureshi and Wing Commander Singh, aimed to present a clear picture of the unprovoked aggression faced by India on that night. India’s response, while firm and effective in neutralizing the threats and inflicting losses on the Pakistan army, was also characterized as proportionate and responsible, particularly in avoiding harm to civilian air traffic, a point where Pakistan was severely criticized.
