New Delhi: A ceasefire agreed upon by India and Pakistan to bring calm to the borders was short-lived, as Pakistani forces resorted to violations in multiple areas on the night of May 10, 2025, just hours after the understanding came into effect. India’s armed forces retaliated effectively to these provocations, with the situation reported to be largely normal in the affected regions as of Sunday morning. The ceasefire, scheduled to commence at 5:00 PM IST on Saturday, May 10, 2025, following a conversation between the Directors General of Military Operations (DGMOs) of both countries, was aimed at halting all firing and military action. However, the tranquility was shattered by late evening.
Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri addressed the violations in a late-night briefing on Saturday, May 10, 2025, around 11:00 PM IST. “For the last few hours, there have been repeated violations of the understanding arrived at earlier this evening between the Directors General of Military Operations of India and Pakistan. This is a breach of the understanding arrived at earlier today,” stated Mr. Misri. He further added, “The armed forces are giving an adequate and appropriate response to these violations and we take very very serious notice of these violations. We call upon Pakistan to take appropriate steps to address these violations and deal with the situation with seriousness and responsibility.”
Reports of violations emerged from various sectors, including areas in Jammu and Kashmir like Srinagar and Udhampur, as well as regions in Punjab and Rajasthan such as Barmer. These violations reportedly involved drone sightings and shelling, triggering alerts and precautionary blackouts in several locations. In response to Pakistan’s breach of the ceasefire, the Indian armed forces, acting under clear instructions, responded with commensurate intensity to neutralize the threats and protect India’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
As of Sunday morning, reports from many of the previously affected areas indicate a return to normalcy. While a sense of vigilance remains, residents are resuming their daily activities. For instance, the situation in Jammu city and Poonch is reported to be normal, with no fresh incidents of firing or shelling overnight. Similarly, authorities in Amritsar have stated that the situation is peaceful, although a red alert had been in place earlier.
Reacting to the violation, Congress MP Shashi Tharoor took a poetic dig at Pakistan, posting a Hindi couplet on X (formerly Twitter) that roughly translates to, “It’s their nature to go back on their word, how can I trust their promises?” Earlier, commenting on the initial ceasefire announcement, Mr. Tharoor had welcomed the move, stating that India’s intention was to teach terrorists a lesson and not engage in a long-term war.
The swift violation of the ceasefire by Pakistan hours after its commencement has once again highlighted the fragile nature of the relationship and the persistent challenges related to cross-border provocations. India maintains that its stance against terrorism remains uncompromising, irrespective of temporary arrangements on the border.
